Code blocks are part of the Markdown spec, but syntax highlighting isnt. However, many renderers like Githubs and Markdown Here support syntax highlighting. Which languages are supported and how those language names should be written will vary from renderer to renderer. The language will be detected automatically, if possible. GitHub's CSS for code block with syntax highlighting - gh-code.css Inline code has back-ticks around it. Its syntax, however, varies between different parsers or editors.
